Today’s auction saw a super c. 17 acre holding in a fantastic location come to the market. The property would be suitable for a range of agricultural uses and benefits from a natural water course. Furthermore, the lands have potential for residential development (subject to the relevant planning permissions) due to their village centre setting.
Auctioneer David Quinn had guided the lands in the region of €10,000 per acre and noted good interest from local farmers in particular. He added that there were four registered bidders in advance of the auction.
On the day of the auction, bidding opened at €120,000 and briskly rose as far as €190,000 when a break was called to take client instructions. Upon his return to the auction room, Mr. Quinn notified said that they were still a little short of the reserve and invited further offers. This invitation was quickly accepted and with the entry of a new bidder into the fray, the property was put “on the market” at €200,000. A battle between two bidders ensued until the hammer fell at €214,000 (€12,588 per acre).
Speaking directly after the auction, David Quinn said that the result “marked a strong vote of confidence in the Carlow agricultural land market going into the year ahead”. He added that his clients were “delighted with the price achieved under the hammer”.
